# How to evaluate B2B marketing agencies (not a fake top 10)
> There is no honest public ranking of the "top B2B marketing agencies" that matches your ICP, ACV, and motion. Directories and award lists are research inputs. Build a shortlist from fit, proof in your category, and a paid trial of the working team.

## Why a ranked top 10 is usually an ad

Search results for this query are full of listicles that reshuffle the same logos. Many are paid placements or affiliate pages. A global network that is "top" for a $2M brand campaign may be a poor fit for a 12-person SaaS team that needs pipeline from webinars and outbound. Ranking without your constraints is decoration.

**How to evaluate without a fake top-ten list**

| Ask | Walk if |
| --- | --- |
| Who did the work last quarter | They will not name a person |
| What they will not do | Everything is in scope |
| Who owns the list and ads account | They keep the logins |

## Fit over fame

Look for work in your motion (ABM, product-led, industrial, healthcare) and in your deal size. Ask for two references who bought something like you buy, not a logo slide from five years ago. Meet the people who will be on the Slack channel. If the pitch team will not be on the account, treat the pitch as theatre.

[Clutch](https://clutch.co) and similar directories can help you find firms and read reviews. Use them to assemble a long list. Do not treat their order as a trophy table you can paste into a board deck.

## A working evaluation

Give three finalists the same short brief and a modest paid diagnostic or a two-week content/paid test. Score them on diagnosis quality, how they talk to sales, and whether they push back. The cheapest proposal is often the one that skipped the hard part. The most expensive is sometimes a brand shop you do not need.

- Can they explain your ICP back to you without jargon?
- Do they ask for CRM reality, or only for a mood board?
- Is the working team named, with hours?
- What do they refuse to do (a good sign if it matches risk you care about)?
